The Gifted Specialist works in collaboration with classroom teachers as well as in gifted pullout classes. In both capacities, the goal is to supplement and build on academic skills and knowledge of the regular curriculum in order to provide continuity and academic rigor. Activities are designed to develop critical and creative problem solving skills.

Gifted Education Collaboration:
Gifted ed. collaboration means the Gifted Specialist works with the classroom teachers or other specialists within the regular curriculum to meet the needs of advanced students.

Gifted Pullout Classes:
Gifted pullout classes provide the opportunity for advanced learners to meet with the Gifted Specialist on a regular basis and to be stimulated by intellectual peers in higher level thinking skill activities. Much of the focus in gifted classes is to empower the students to recognize their own abilities and to become responsible and efficient learners. They are encouraged to raise their expectations and always strive for quality in their work. The students are are asked periodically to asses what they have that week to enhance their progress, e.g. What books are you currently reading? What math concept or skill are you working on? How might that knowledge be useful in the world? Show an example of your best writing and look for ways it might be improved. What have you done this week to make a positive difference for yourself or someone else?   The goal is to teach our gifted learners to use knowledge and creative skills to produce new knowledge so that they can become producers as well as consumers of knowledge.

Specific Activities Within Pullout Classes:

• Activities to develop fluency, flexibility, originality, & elaboration in thinking
• Analogies (verbal, numerical, & spatial) to develop logical thinking
• Activities to develop geography skills
• Open response math questions to develop problem solving skills and to learn how to clearly explain their thinking process.
  
• Seminars, in-depth studies in a specific interest area, designed to stimulate higher level thinking and discussions as well as engage the students in investigative research projects in a topic of their choice.
